TORONTO – Health Canada issued recalls Friday affecting several products, including children’s items that could cause injury.

The Parents Busy Time Activity Center, manufactured for Manhattan Group LLC of Minneapolis, Minn., includes a xylophone with wooden pegs that can come loose, posing a choking hazard to children.

The recalled toy has the date code 400090GC, model number 400090 and UPC 011964447640. Only activity centres with wooden pegs with date code 400090GC are involved in this recall. Activity centres with orange plastic pegs are not included.

Health Canada has not received any reports of incidents or injuries related to the use of these toys, which were sold from December 2010 to February 2011. About 100 of the recalled products were sold in Canada at specialty and gift stores, and through mail order catalogues and online sales.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and Manhattan Toy have received one report of a child putting a peg in his mouth. In Canada, Manhattan Toy has received one report in which a mother noticed the pegs came off. No injuries were reported.

Consumers should return the toy to place of purchase for a refund or exchange. Consumers may contact Manhattan Toy for instructions on receiving a replacement item or a full refund: 1-800-541-1345.

Also being recalled is the Oball Links Mini Rattle, made by Rhino Toys, Inc. of Santa Cruz, Calif.

The Oball is attached to a plastic chain by a C-shaped plastic link. The C-link can break, releasing small parts that pose a choking hazard to young children.

About 840 were sold in Canada from June 2010 to February 2011. Recalled products have model number 1048 and UPC 8-34282-01048-4 printed on the back of the packaging.

Health Canada has not received any reports of incidents or injuries related to the product; the U.S. CPSC has received one report of the C-link breaking, with no reported injuries.

Burlington Basket Bassinets manufactured in the United States before June 2010 are also being recalled. Affected models have folding legs attached to the basket with white plastic pins. Bassinets with non-folding legs attached with metal pins are not being recalled.

Health Canada says that if the cross-bracing rails are not fully locked into position, the bassinets can collapse, causing an infant to fall to the floor or within the bassinet and suffer injuries.

Manufacturer Burlington Basket Company of Burlington, Iowa, has received 10 reports of incidents in which the recalled bassinets collapsed when the folding legs were not locked into place. Two infants received minor injuries as a result. Health Canada has not received any reports of incidents or injuries related to the product’s use.

Consumers should immediately stop using the bassinets and check the cross-bracing support rails to make sure they are in the locked position. Contact Burlington Basket Company for a free kit that includes labels and detailed instructions on proper assembly of the support rails. A video showing proper assembly of the bassinets is also available on the Burlington Basket Company’s website,www.burlingtonbasket.com.

Consumers may contact Burlington Basket Company at 1-800-553-2300 or visit the company’s website.

About 166 of the affected bassinets were sold at specialty stores and juvenile product stores across Canada from January 2005 to January 2006.

Health Canada is also recalling the Baby Jogger Jump Seat on certain Baby Jogger strollers, made by Baby Jogger of Richmond, Va., and distributed in Canada by Brands in Motion Inc. of Mississauga, Ont.

The fabric seat can be attached to the mounting bracket on the frame of a Baby Jogger City Elite, Baby Jogger City Classic, or Baby Jogger Summit stroller, allowing a toddler and baby to ride together in the same stroller at the same time.

The recalled accessory has the name “Baby Jogger” on the front and item number J7J50. The item number can be found on the product packaging.

If the jump seat is not attached to the stroller frame properly and locked into place, it can detach from the frame, posing a risk of injury to the child sitting in it.

In Canada, Baby Jogger has received one report of the Jump Seat detaching from the stroller frame, leading to a child suffering scrapes and bruises. There have been three similar reports in the United States.

Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled jump seat and contact Brands in Motion, Inc. at 1-866-774-7177 or visit the Baby Jogger website:www.babyjogger.com.

In Canada, about 490 of the jump seats were sold at Direct Buy and various other juvenile product stores between January 2008 and July 2010

Finally, Health Canada is recalling the FORSTA coffee-tea maker, comprised of a handmade clear glass pot, metal holder, and black plastic top and handle. The article number 20149707 and the words “IKEA” and “Made in China” are etched on the bottom of the metal holder.

Pressure from the metal pot holder against the glass pot can potentially cause the glass to break, posing a laceration hazard and a risk of burns.

IKEA has received two reports in Canada of the pot breaking, one in which the customer received minor cuts and one with no injury. Worldwide there have been 18 additional reports of the glass pot breaking, with nine reports of burns from spilt coffee or tea.

Consumers should immediately stop using the beverage maker and bring it to any IKEA store for a refund. For more information, consumers may contact IKEA toll-free at 1-800-661-9807.

About 33,670 of the coffee-tea makers were sold at IKEA stores across Canada from February 2010 to December 2010.

Step 2 Toys | How To Fix Stuffed Animals – Stitching In 3 Simple Steps

Have you or your son or daughter ever had a favorite toy that’s gotten a little worse for wear? With all the times your favorite plush toys get squeezed, dragged around, and played, with wear and tear takes an inevitable toll. Little rips can make your most beloved teddy bear look more like a Franken Bear, suitable only for Halloween. Luckily, this problem isn’t as hopeless as you might think. There are a few steps you can take to fix almost any soft plush toy so that they are practically as good as new!

<b>Step 1</b>

Identifying the specific problem area (or areas) is your first step. The most common rips happen at the toy’s stitches, which can include where the legs, arms, or head were sewn on to the body, which is what we are going to focus on. This is naturally the weakest point on a stuffed animals body, and when squeezed the stuffing puts pressure on these areas, causing the stitching to fail. These rips might not all be easy to fix, but they can mostly be approached in the same way.

<b>Step 2</b>

For the second step, you’ll need to pick up supplies. There are some basic tools you’ll need when the seams on a plush toy are unraveling: a needle and thread. The thread should match the stuffed animals fabric, or be as neutral or complementary in color as possible. Make sure the thread is tough too, otherwise you’ll just have to do this again a couple of months down the road. Most needles you can get as part of a set, and that way you’ll have needles in various sizes. This is important because a big teddy bear may require a thick, touch needle, while a small plush dog should have a small, delicate needle. Also, get a needle threader if you have trouble getting the thread through.

<b>Step 3</b>

For step three, learn what you need to do. Even an amateur sewer can stitch up a stuffed animal, it is not at all complicated. First, thread the needle with an arm’s length of thread so that you make sure that you won’t run out, as that complicates the sewing. Once the needle has been threaded, double the thread and tie a knot at the end. This way you’ll have two rows of thread with a knot at the bottom away from the needle. Now it’s time to start sewing. On one side of the split seam, push the needle through, and then push it across through the other side of the split seam. Pull so that the two sides come together, and then push the needle in again on the next part as you sew in a diagonal pattern. Keep doing this so that you stitch the ripped sides together. When you get to the end, have the needle go through the last stitch and wrap it around, so that the last stitch is strong. Then, tie a knot or two as close to the stitch as possible in order to make sure that no thread is showing. Finally, cut the thread.

So there you go, practically any stuffed animal can be fixed with a minimum of hassle. It only takes a couple of minutes of your time, and the purchase of a needle and thread is very inexpensive. Now you can think twice before throwing your favorite toys away!

Geek Toys | Out-of-the-Box Geek Gifts Ideas For Your Geek Buddy

Are you shopping for geek gifts for a geek friend? Is your geek friend into technology and gadgets? Getting the perfect gifts for him can be very frustrating because, most often than not, the things that bring a smile into his face cannot be normally found in malls or your local gift store. Though finding an amazing gift for your geek buddy can be quite a challenge, it does not have to be a chore. To find the perfect gift, begin by thinking about what type of a geek your friend is and what he is interested in. Is he the James Bond-type, or much more like the mathematician-type of geek? Or maybe he is a survivalist-type of geek?

If you have a James Bond-type of a geek friend, for instance, spy on your geek gifts recipient and check to see if he has been hiding his embarrassment for his quite-obsolete cell phone or is secretly drooling at the sight of his rich friends’ ‘smart’ cell phones; perhaps it’s time that you should buy him one of those hot, new smart phones! He’d love to see himself as the next James Bond guy and a unique, rugged- or retro-looking wristwatch will surely complete his high-tech gadgets.

If your friend is a Richard Dean Anderson-like or MacGyverish type of geek, multi-function-type gifts, such as a Swiss knife set, are exactly the types of gifts they would surely love! Granted, Swiss knives are not anymore the hot items that they used to be, but a lot of people (geeks included) still love their handiness and utility, and your geek gifts recipient would appreciate one too, especially if he doesn’t have one yet. Tired of giving Swiss knives? Other MacGyverish ideas are multi-function flash lights or those which fit snugly on or atop their wearer’s ears, handy for jobs involving aiming a light while working with both hands!

Your Sherlock Holmes-type geek of a friend would greatly appreciate inexpensive, security-type toy gadgets such as laser trip wires or motion-activated gizmos. These toys are used by geeks who love to wire them around their house or near their bedroom, to let them know if someone is approaching or not! Other geek toys that Sherlock Holmes types would love to have are inexpensive book vault safes, hidden wall or outlet safes, cheap listening device kits, various kinds of intruder alarms like Google Spy Science, water-soluble security papers that are useful for sending secret messages, and a variety of USB locks.

By the way, have you heard of the product called Survival Kit in a Sardine Can and other similar products? Now those are perfect for your true-blue Survivalist-type of geeks!

Your DOS/ASCII or Linux-and/or-BSD-loving, Windows-bashing type of geek friend, similar to the Mathematical or Mathematician-type of geeks, would love all sorts of toys and other ‘items’ featuring the ubiquitous, mostly yellow-colored ASCII smiley characters or Tux, the predominantly yellow, black, and white-colored Linux ‘penguin’ mascot, or even Beastie, the predominantly red-colored BSD Operating System mascot who wields a trident spear.

Additionally, Mathematical or Mathematician-type geeks are also suckers for all sorts of puzzles, IQ or otherwise, but most especially the ‘mathematical’ kinds! But of course, to avoid embarrassment, check first to see if your geek buddy hasn’t seen or done the puzzle toy that you have in mind before purchasing it for him. Also, have you heard of the ‘Shake Powered Calculator’ or the ‘Roll-up Calculator’ or even the ‘Water-Powered Calculator’? Mathematical or Mathematician-type geeks would also greatly appreciate them!

Conservation-conscious, Mother Earth types of geeks, on the other hand, admire all sorts of toys made of recycled materials. Examples of this are the Scrap Metal Sculpture series of toys.

Lastly, have you heard of the product called LED Binary Watch and other similar-themed products? These are just the type of toys that the I-only-speak-in-Binary or hexadecimal type of geeks would die for!

So there you have it; just some geek gifts ideas for your geek buddy. There are plenty more out there. All you need to do is to invest some of your valuable time to look for them and to think a little bit out-of-the-box.

GLENDALE, CA ” Disney Consumer Products (DCP) today announced that it will continue its commitment to helping families eat healthier foods by expanding its produce offering to make Disney-branded produce more widely available and offer more product variety. Families can shop at grocery and national retailers for healthy options including sliced apples and Foodles by Crunch Pak and produce from Dayka Hackett and Chelan Fresh. The expansion effort will include packaging changes to the line of Disney-branded produce such as an update to the recognizable stylized green leaf bearing the Disney logo; placement of nutritional information on the front of packaging, making it easier for families to identify healthy foods; and the addition of the Disney Magic of Healthy Living logo. The packaging transition in the marketplace will be seamless and cause no disruption in product availability.

During the next year, DCP’s produce licensees expect to launch several new and refreshed Disney-branded products that capitalize on synergistic promotional opportunities tied to Disney entertainment content and beloved characters. To facilitate the ongoing expansion, DCP will collaborate with Minneapolis, Minn.-based Golden Sun Marketing to enter into new license agreements with fresh produce growers and shippers.

“Since Disney announced landmark nutritional guidelines associating Disney brands and characters with a more nutritionally balanced range of foods, we have helped bring more than one billion servings of fruits and vegetables to children and parents looking for healthy food choices,” said John King, director of food for DCP. “By forging relationships directly with leading suppliers and growers, we’re one step ahead in building on this strong foundation. We’re reaching even more families through an expanded product offering with the positive message of eating more fruits and vegetables.”

Disney understands the challenges faced by parents in regard to their family’s nutrition and wants to be part of the solution. In 2006, Disney announced new food guidelines aimed at giving parents and children healthier eating options. Under these guidelines, Disney committed to using its name and characters on kid-focused food products that meet specific criteria, including limits on calories, fat, saturated fat and sugar. The guidelines also included a long-term target for balancing the licensed food portfolio such that 85% will be everyday foods with the smaller 15% comprised of special-occasion treats. DCP has achieved this goal in North America.

As part of its ongoing effort to promote healthier lifestyles and nutrition for kids and families, Disney announced last September the Magic of Healthy Living ” a national multimedia initiative designed to help parents with their quest to raise healthy, happy kids. The initiative, which included public service announcements featuring First Lady Michelle Obama and young Disney stars, builds on Disney’s commitment to a healthier generation of kids.
